Pace, distance, and time are one equation
Fix any two and the third is determined. That is what makes pace planning useful: a target finish time for a known distance immediately produces the average pace you have to hold, and an honest look at whether you have ever held it. Working the other direction, a pace you can sustain comfortably in training tells you what finish time is realistic before race day tells you the hard way.
Average pace is not race strategy
The calculated pace is an average, and running it as an even effort is a different thing from running it as an even pace. On a hilly course an even pace means wildly uneven effort; on a flat one, even pacing is close to optimal and most amateur runners fail at it by starting too fast. The classic positive split — going out ahead of target and fading — costs more time in the final third than the early bank ever gained, because glycogen depletion and rising core temperature are not linear.
Heat and humidity deserve a specific allowance. Above roughly 15°C, most runners lose time progressively as temperature rises, and attempting a cool-weather target pace in warm conditions is one of the most reliable ways to blow up.
Distance measurement adds a hidden gap
Courses are certified along the shortest legal route, and almost nobody runs it — weaving through crowds, taking wide lines through bends, and moving to aid stations typically adds a small but real percentage. GPS watches also disagree with certified distances, usually reading long. The practical consequence is that hitting your average pace exactly according to your watch may still leave you slightly behind the clock at the finish, so plan a small buffer.

Common questions
Should I run an even pace or an even effort?
Even effort on hills, even pace on the flat. Holding a fixed pace uphill spikes your effort far above sustainable levels, and the time lost later usually exceeds anything gained on the climb.
Why does my watch disagree with the race distance?
Courses are measured along the shortest legal line, and GPS accumulates small errors that usually read long. Between the two, most runners cover slightly more than the official distance, so build in a small buffer.
How much should I slow down in the heat?
It varies by individual and acclimatisation, but most runners lose time progressively above about 15°C. Adjusting the target rather than trying to force a cool-weather pace is the reliable choice.
Is a negative split really better?
For most runners, yes. Starting slightly below target and finishing faster is consistently associated with better finish times than starting fast and fading, because the late-race slowdown from going out too hard is disproportionately large.
