Why waking between cycles feels different
Sleep progresses through stages — light, deep, and REM — in repeating cycles. Waking during deep slow-wave sleep produces sleep inertia: the heavy, disoriented grogginess that can last twenty minutes or more, with measurably impaired reaction time and decision-making. Waking during light sleep at the end of a cycle usually feels much easier. Timing an alarm to land between cycles rather than inside one is the whole idea behind cycle-based planning.
Ninety minutes is an average, not a clock
Real cycle length varies between people and across the night, commonly running anywhere from about 70 to 120 minutes. The first cycles of the night are richer in deep sleep and tend to be shorter; later cycles contain proportionally more REM and often run longer. Any fixed 90-minute grid will therefore drift out of phase by the third or fourth cycle. Treat the suggested times as approximate targets, and note that falling asleep itself takes most people 10 to 20 minutes — a delay this planner accounts for but which varies with how tired you are.
Total sleep still matters more than timing
Optimising the wake moment cannot compensate for insufficient sleep. Most adults need seven to nine hours, and the evidence that chronic short sleep impairs cognition, mood, immune function, and metabolic health is strong. Five cycles timed perfectly is still 7.5 hours; four is six hours, which is short for most people regardless of when the alarm lands.
Regularity is the other underrated factor. A consistent wake time — including at weekends — stabilises circadian timing and usually improves sleep quality more than any alarm-timing trick. If you routinely need an alarm to wake and feel unrefreshed despite adequate hours, that is worth raising with a clinician rather than solving with arithmetic.
